Raw Cacao
I have a few recipes where raw cacao is used . Use the tag CACAO for this list. Raw cacao is one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. What sits in most pantries is cocoa powder, which has been alkali-processed (dutched) at high heat, stripping away the very compounds that make cacao so remarkable. Raw cacao is a different thing entirely.
Cacao is the richest dietary source of magnesium, a mineral chronically deficient in modern diets and essential for over 300 enzymatic reactions. The flavanols in raw cacao have been shown to improve endothelial function, support nitric oxide production (which relaxes blood vessels), and reduce the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. A study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that cocoa flavanol intake was associated with improved flow-mediated dilation, a marker of cardiovascular health.(Journal of Nutrition, Vol. 136, No. 6, June 2006)
Cacao also contains a remarkable suite of neuroactive compounds: theobromine for gentle, sustained energy without the crash of caffeine; phenylethylamine (PEA) associated with elevated mood and focus; anandamide is a naturally occurring endocannabinoid; and tryptophan, a precursor to serotonin. It is one of the few foods that genuinely supports mood chemistry at a mechanistic level.
The key is to use raw, minimally processed cacao to preserve these benefits. Once you taste raw cacao in a blended drink like this one, the difference is hard to ignore.

Avocado. A Synergistic Pair
I have also written about avocados before, about their phytosterols, antioxidant activity, and why stone-hard supermarket avocados can actually be nutritionally superior to later-harvested ones. You can read that post here. In this recipe, avocado plays an entirely different role: it is the base, the creaminess, and the bioavailability enhancer all at once.
Many of cacao’s most powerful antioxidant compounds are fat-soluble meaning they are better absorbed in the presence of dietary fat. Avocado’s rich monounsaturated fat content essentially acts as a carrier for cacao’s active polyphenols, increasing their uptake significantly. This is not marketing language; it is basic nutritional biochemistry.
Together, the two ingredients work across multiple pathways simultaneously: cacao’s flavanols improve endothelial function and reduce LDL oxidation, while avocado’s oleic acid raises HDL cholesterol and its beta-sitosterol blocks dietary cholesterol absorption. Avocado also contributes folate and vitamin B6, the essential cofactors for serotonin and dopamine synthesis, amplifying cacao’s mood-supporting properties.

Why Oats?
Gluten-free rolled oats bring body and satiety to what would otherwise be a thin drink. More importantly, oats contain beta-glucan, a soluble fibre with some of the strongest evidence in nutrition science for reducing LDL cholesterol and supporting gut microbiome diversity. The European Food Safety Authority has approved the cholesterol-lowering health claim for oat beta-glucan at just 3g per day.
When soaked briefly before blending, oats also begin breaking down their phytic acid content — improving the absorption of minerals like zinc, iron, and magnesium. Given how mineral-rich this drink already is, that is worth the extra ten minutes.
You have an option to replace Oats and Water ingredients by a premium coconut milk or barista oat milk.

4 Serves.
Avocado Mocha
Ingredients:
- 1 ripe avocado, peeled and pitted
- 4 tbsp raw cacao powder
- 4 tsp gluten-free rolled oats
- 400 ml cold filtered water
- (Oats and water can be replaced by 400ml of coconut or barista oat milk.)
- 6 Medjool dates, pitted (or any pitted 60g/2oz)
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup ice cubes
- 1 tsp Ceylon cinnamon
- 1 pinch sea salt (optional, intensifies cacao)
Method:
- Soak the oats: Place 4 tablespoons gluten-free rolled oats in a small bowl and cover with cold filtered water. Soak for 10 minutes.
- Soak the dates: If pitted dates are not very soft, soak them in a small amount of warm water for 10 minutes and drain before adding. Very fresh, soft Medjool dates can go in directly.
- Blend avocado, cacao powder, dates, vanilla extract, sea salt (if using), soaked oats and water to a high-speed blender until completely smooth and creamy.
- Add 1 cups ice cubes and blend again for 10–20 seconds until thick, frosty, and velvety.
- Pour into glasses and garnish with a Ceylon cinnamon powder and serve immediately while icy and thick.
